The faces of Egon Schiele : self portraits

- 9783777441832
A lavishly produced volume of Egon Schiele's self-portraits.
Egon Schiele's contorted and eccentric figures are among the most familiar and iconic images in twentieth-century art. A good many of those figures are self-portraits. Schiele returned to himself as a subject again and again over a period of many years, recording himself in various poses and styles. When he used his own body as a model, his interest often lay not in his actual self, but more generally in the position of the individual in the changing modern world. Posing in a variety of roles, Schiele uses his face like a mask. This beautifully produced book offers a comprehensive account of this crucial, yet underappreciated, aspect of Schiele's art. -

For the first time, the Lebanese-American writer and artist Etel Adnan is being honoured with a comprehensive retrospective in Germany. This volume presents her fascinating work from all creative phases and media. Politically, poetically and metaphysically - Adnan's texts and pictures reflect the lively exchange between the Arab and the Western world.
Etel Adnan (1925-2021) spent her life between Lebanon, France and California. She has long been famous as a writer; now this volume presents her impressive artistic personality in the combined exploration of her texts, paintings, tapestries and leporellos. Her biography between the cultures and her feminism play a part, as does her relationship to calligraphy and to American and Arab literature. The publication is a tribute to a cosmopolitan artist, to whom painting represented the love of the world. -
A comprehensive portrait of the Bauhaus artist's work.
Known for his famous expressionist images of architecture, Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) was a painter, graphic artist, and caricaturist who served as one of the original teachers at the Bauhaus school of design. In 1936 he immigrated to New York, where he worked until the end of his life.
This volume presents a full picture of Feininger's work, featuring 140 paintings, drawings, caricatures, watercolors, woodcuts, and other art objects drawn from across the artist's creative phases. In addition, the book includes previously unreleased photographs of the Bauhaus and excerpts from the diary of his wife, Julia, an artist who studied at the school. Contributions by an international group of scholars discuss the subjects and topics which characterized Feininger's work, as well as lines of development in his art. In particular, his early paintings are evaluated alongside recent research into photography's significance in his creative work.
The catalog accompanies a 2023 retrospective of Feininger's work at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. -

The English illustrator Anna Atkins (1799-1871) was in every respect a modern woman. For the publication of her plant collections she used the latest technology, the recently invented cyanotype. In 1843 she used the process to create the first photo book in history, with images of breathtaking beauty and originality which often look like modern art.
At first Anna Atkins worked for and with her father, the zoologist John George Children; later she chose the objects for her scientific compositions herself: algae and ferns. Atkins placed them on light-sensitive paper that turned dark blue in water after being developed, with the exception of the places that had been covered by the plants. Initially alone, and then with her friend Anne Dixon, she produced well over 10,000 copies of her photograms and assembled them in several books like albums. Today these rare copies are regarded as treasures and are preserved in museums and libraries. -

A detailed and richly illustrated study of a rediscovered realist painter.
Recent years have seen a renewed interest in the painter Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993), whose striking landscapes, portraits, self-portraits, and sensual nudes demonstrate her synthesis of traditional painting style and modern subject matter. Born in Germany and exiled to Sweden during the Nazi regime, Laserstein created a diverse and extensive body of work over five decades.
Incorporating essays on Laserstein's work in Berlin before her exile and her reception in Sweden, images of her art, and unpublished archival material, this book furthers our understanding of the artist's life and creative output. Iris Müller-Westerman and Anna-Carola Krausse include art from the whole of Laserstein's career, including previously unpublished work. Other contributions build on debates about gender and queerness in the artist's work and analyze her assimilation strategies in Sweden. The catalog accompanies a 2023 retrospective at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
Shedding new light on Laserstein's life and art, this book cements her reputation as one of the twentieth century's great realists. -
Ai Weiwei is not only one of the most important contemporary artists; he is also an untiring activist and critic of authoritarian systems. "Humanity" includes key works from all phases of the artist's career and examines in detail the aspect of humanity and artistic responsibility in the oeuvre of Ai Weiwei.
The catalogue sheds light on concepts such as surveillance, censorship, human rights, freedom of expression, human displacement, radical responsibility, the power of beauty, and the truth of poetry. Guided by these thoughts, it offers new perspectives to understand the relevance of Ai Weiwei's artistic language. It will encompass a wide range of art-historical paradigms (such as the readymade) alongside more radical activist strategies, all aimed at exploring the extremes of the contemporary human condition on a global scale.

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) is regarded as the poet amongst modernist artists. His works from the 1930s and 1940s are less well known. In them, his bright colour palette became darker. Even in the early 1930s, Chagall addressed the increasingly aggressive anti-Semitism and touched in his artistic works on central themes such as identity, homeland and exile.
In over 100 haunting paintings, works on paper and costumes, the volume traces the artist's search for a pictorial language in the face of displacement and persecution. It presents important works in which Chagall increasingly focuses on his Jewish environment: numerous self-portraits, his devotion to allegorical and Biblical subjects, important designs from his time in exile in the United States and main works like The Falling Angel. The book offers a highly topical perspective on the oeuvre of one of the most important artists of the 20th century. -

A concise and insightful overview of one of the most beloved artists in the world.
An iconic artist and feminist trailblazer, Frida Kahlo painted images that reflect her self-perception, fears, illness, and passions, often in the face of social taboos. Pride and strength, vulnerability and bitterness intertwine in her art. Drawing inspiration from her biography, Kahlo distilled her life experiences into her subject matter. Her self-portraits, which make up the principal part of her work, often depict a charismatic woman dressed in traditional Tehuana dress. Kahlo wore this attire to signal her Mexican identity, but also to hide wounds from her complicated marriage to the artist Diego Rivera, the bus accident that altered the course of her life, and the sorrow she felt over her childlessness. Though she portrayed scenes with exaggeration and fantasy, Kahlo disagreed with critics who described her as a surrealist: «That is wrong. I never painted dreams. What I portrayed was my reality.» This compact book includes many of Kahlo's most important works in context, explaining the subjects, ideas, and history that have contributed to her widespread acclaim -
A richly illustrated survey of the work of one of the best-known German artists of the twentieth century.
Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) was one of the best-known German artists of the twentieth century. The unmistakable, touching language of her graphic and sculptural works is quickly grasped across cultures, enabling her work to be celebrated around the world.
Kollwitz debuted her graphic cycle «Ein Weberaufstand,» for which she drew inspiration from Gerhart Hauptmann's drama of the same name, at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1898. It was a great success, even as it caused a stir among the authorities because of its socially critical message. Outraged by the social ills of her time, Kollwitz dedicated her life to depicting people and giving a voice to the misery and grief of the poor and underprivileged in her works. Equally ingenious in terms of expression and artistic implementation, she took up themes such as farewell and death, peace, and the suffering of war in her graphics and sculptures. But she also offered intimate depictions of a mother and child, as well as self-portraits full of strength and beauty. This volume provides a brief but comprehensive overview of the artist's life and oeuvre. -

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) is renowned for his two-dimensional, ornamental works, which made him famous worldwide as the most important representative of Viennese Art Nouveau. This volume provides insight into the artistic influences of the great artists of Modernism who helped to firm his remarkable oeuvre.
Vienna in 1900 - the Vienna Secession, galleries, private art collectors and art magazines - introduced the art of the European avant-garde into Gustav Klimt's surroundings. The Viennese artist was open to the pictorial language of his contemporaries including Alma-Tadema, Minne, Rodin, Toorop, Hodler, Van Gogh, Monet, Khnopff, Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler, Matisse and many others, and adapted elements from a variety of styles. The publication presents in large-format illustrations the works of Klimt and artists who were close to him, revealing significant and often surprising parallels.

Around 1500, Lucas Cranach the Elder steps onto the world stage - in Vienna. The publication explores this, the artist's earliest period of work and presents all the paintings he produced during this time, their expressiveness radically different from the courtly-elegant compositions he subsequently produced as court painter in Wittenberg.
Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) produced his earliest works around 1500 in Vienna, shortly before moving to Wittenberg to become court painter to the Elector of Saxony. These brilliant paintings, drawings, and woodcuts document both the thirty-year-old's close contacts with the humanist circles of Konrad Celtis and Johannes Cuspinian, and identify him as a precursor of the so-called Danube School.

The artist Kubra Khademi (b. 1989) lives in Paris and focuses in her work on her life as a woman and a person with direct experience as a refugee. This makes it both political and highly topical. Multi-faceted themes pervade her art, including her function as mouthpiece and as an element in the fight for the fundamental rights of women, as well as artistic work in exile and in a Muslim society.
In paintings and more recently with the use of photographic techniques and embroidery, Khademi presents tranquil nude female figures that - depending on the angle - can nonetheless be interpreted as provocative. They are juxtaposed with impressive performances that draw on the artist's own physical experiences as a subject. Khademi focuses her attention on the male-dominated society in countries like her native Afghanistan and the socio-political situation there, linking together motifs from mythology, art history and politics. Kubra Khademi has received many awards for her work, and this overview publication presents her oeuvre in all its complexity. -
"I want to have an effect during this age in which people are so perplexed and in need of help." This sentence, a diary entry from 1922, is the creed of a great artist. It is as topical today as it was then. Kathe Kollwitz (1867 - 1945) achieved worldwide respect with her drawings, printed graphics and sculptures even during her lifetime. With her great cycles of graphic works Ein Weberaufstand (A Weavers' Revolt) and Bauernkrieg (The Peasant War), Kathe Kollwitz demonstrated her skills as a graphic artist at an early stage in a remarkable manner. From the start of her career her etchings, lithographs and woodcuts were included in the collections of renowned art institutes.
Her fame as an artist grew steadily and was acknowledged by countless awards. In 1919 she was even the first woman to be appointed professor by the Prussian Academy of Arts. This new monograph presents with unprecedented density the life and work of Kathe Kollwitz, one of the most important German women artists of Classic Modernism.
