Aujourd'hui professeur à l'école de médecine de New York, le docteur Eric Manheimer a été le directeur médical de l'hôpital Bellevue, à New York, de 1997 à 2012, date de parution de ce livre aux Etats-Unis. Il a deux enfants et un petit-fils, né à l'hôpital Bellevue. Son témoignage a inspiré la série New Amsterdam, diffusée sur TF1.
